Lazarus House Emergency Shelter

"It has been my second chance in life! We have a roof over our head, stability and are getting bills up to date. My husband and I are getting our life back on track!" - Lyndia & Adrian, Six children

People thrive in Lazarus House's Emergency Shelter with 7 rooms that include 41 beds and seven cribs in a family-like environment that fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the household. During this time, guests make huge strides toward learning valuable life skills and putting together a clear set of goals for their future. Lazarus House is the only emergency shelter in the Greater Lawrence area that requires all guests to be free of drug and alcohol use. This fundamental policy enables us to provide a safe and comfortable place for children, women, and men who are homeless. The shelter program also requires all guests to develop and adhere to a personal program that addresses structure, planning for the future and how to save money while staying at the shelter. Program requirements require shelter guests to:

  • Save 90% of their income while at the shelter
  • Contribute one chore a day to the running of the house
  • Work with their advocates on a step-by-step plan to self-sufficiency
