The picture was taken last year during my first running in the Boston Marathon in 2008. The photographer is a friend Bob Peek who was waiting on the bridge over Rt. 128.
This year will be my second marathon. I will have the distinction of running 2 Boston Marathons while I am 51 years old. Last year it was on my birthday, this year the day before.
In the Fall of 2005 I was diagnosed with Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, High Triglycerides and I weighed over 270 lbs. By the grace of God, prayer and getting a wake-up call that I finally took very seriously I started down the path to change my life's direction.
I started exercising by walking on a treadmill at the gym (Yang's Fitness Center) for one hour at 2 mph, 3 times a week. I started making better food choices and eliminating the high carbohydrate foods from my diet.
By the Spring of 2006 I was down to 180 lbs. I was running 3 miles at a time 3 times a week. I worked out at my gym 3 to 4 times a week. I had my trainer friend Cyndi Rayner (who is on the team) teaching me and showing me how to do my exercises better and more effectively. At this time I had brought back into normal ranges my blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride. Over the next year I was able to get my blood sugar (A1c) count into a normal and excellent ranger and no longer needed any medications.
A year and a half later I found myself running the Boston Marathon on the Lazarus House Team and praising the Lord every step of the way because I could do it and it is all given the Him. To run the marathon with a purpose beyond ones self makes the experience all the better.
I am very thankful the the Lord for my opportunity to participate and to the Lazarus House Team leaders, staff and my family for their support. The needs are greater than ever and your help is always great appreciated.
